COGNITIVE COMPENSATORY TRAINING

Strengthen cognitive skills and well-being with compassionate coaching.

Following a neuropsychological evaluation, some adults with mild cognitive changes may benefit from participating in Cognitive Compensatory Training (CCT). This therapy introduces a variety of mental strategies and external aids designed to help clients manage problems with memory, attention, and organization. The therapy typically follows completion of a comprehensive neuropsychological exam to identify areas of cognitive difficulty. With this information, our interventions are based on the individual’s unique symptoms and functional needs, using a comprehensive, holistic approach that integrates cognitive, emotional, & interpersonal skills.

The treatment may also include:

  • Stress management
  • Cognitive behavioral interventions
  • Optimizing overall health (e.g., sleep hygiene, pain management, healthy habits, prevention of additional injury)
  • Managing comorbid conditions and understanding their contributions to cognitive functioning (e.g., PTSD, mood disorder, anxiety disorder, substance use)
  • Psychoeducation and expectation management
  • Motivational interviewing techniques
    • Identifying activity limitations
    • Setting meaningful goals
    • Promoting active patient engagement in the treatment process
  • Compensatory aids to improve planning, organization, and participation in daily activities, such as work, school and household management tasks
  • Practice with memory, attention, organization, problem solving, and cognitive flexibility skills, using the “Cog-Smart” protocol (www.cogsmart.com), developed at the VA Center of Excellence for Stress and Mental Health and UC San Diego by Dr. Beth Twamley and colleagues.

Services may be provided in-person at one of our Southern California locations (Solana Beach, Encinitas, San Juan Capistrano), or via video telehealth.
